Summary: The general objective of the present research is to investigate the problem of the ontological
foundation of geographical science. To this end, it proposes a parallel between, on the one
hand, the proposition of a Geography on ontological-existential basis, a perspective
developed from a dialogue with the phenomenological thought of the German philosopher
Martin Heidegger; and, on the other hand, Metageography, a theoretical-methodological
proposal conceived within the scope of the Critical-Radical Urban Geography Study Group
(Grupo de Estudos de Geografia Urbana Crítica-Radical) based on a prevalent — though not
exclusive — affiliation with the Marxist thought of Henri Lefebvre. Through this dialogue,
the research hopes to foster a means of broadening the scope of the Geography on
ontological-existential basis proposal, specifically, by emphasizing the way in the which this
proposition allows for the exposure of the enduring validity of the Metaphysical content that,
according of the Heidegger’s thought, tends to prevail in an unsuspected manner within
modern sciences in general, and thus, also at the core of geographical science. Thus, the
investigation proposes to problematize the enduring presence of Metaphysics in this science,
focusing specifically on the dialogue with a currently ongoing proposal in the discipline,
Metageography. The methodology employed consists, under the analytical-operational sense,
in the bibliographical review procedure and, considering the method from a more
fundamental perspective, through the juxtaposition between, on the one hand, the basic
principles of historical and dialectical materialism prevalent in the critical-Marxist branch of
the discipline, which supports the proposition of Metageography; and, on the other hand, the
guidelines of Heidegger’s phenomenological-hermeneutical thought that grounds the project
of a phenomenological Geography on ontological-existential basis.
