Summary: This research is carried out through the relationship between two basic elements:
on the one hand, the humanist-phenomenological horizon in Brazilian research in
Geography and, on the other, Heidegger's thought, also designated - in the
dissertation - as “phenomenology-hermeneutics”. The core of the articulation of
these elements in the dissertation is the problem of the reading of Heidegger's
thought by the humanist horizon in Brazilian research in geography, in view of its
restrictive consequences for the assimilation of the philosopher in this community
of geographical science. To this end, the general aim of the research is to
demonstrate the existence of a problem that internal criticism, already developed
within geography itself, would have overcome decades ago, namely: subjecting the
assimilation of Heidegger's hermeneutic-phenomenology to a humanist
interpretation, with the purpose of grounding a humanist conception of geographical
science, disregarding the frontally incompatible character of the philosopher's
thought with any modality of humanism - for reasons intrinsic and strict to the
philosopher's thought, which will be justified throughout the dissertation. The path
of humanist interpretation of Heidegger's thought, with a view to grounding the
humanist horizon in Geography, goes back to the international renewal movement
in this discipline in the 1970s. In the context of Brazilian research in Geography, the
humanist horizon began to spread in the 1980s and gained momentum in the 1990s.
However, since the 2000s, it has become an aspect - especially the dialog with
Heidegger - with increasing institutional expansion and penetration. The
reproduction of this way of assimilating and interpreting phenomenologicalhermeneutics, especially in works with the character of synthesis (books, theses
and dissertations), published recently in the context of Brazilian research in
Geography, is therefore the focus of the dissertation's problematization. Following
the exposition of Heidegger's recurrent humanist interpretation as an expression of
the recurrence of eclecticism and ambiguities characteristic of this horizon, the
dissertation will seek to present, by contrast, a perspective of assimilation of the
basic elements of Heidegger's phenomenological-hermeneutics, in view of the
significance that his thought can assume when assimilated into a specific science,
namely: to put into perspective the possibility of an interpretation of geographical
science on a phenomenological-hermeneutic basis, which conflicts with the
investigation of the ontological-existential bases of this science.
