Summary: This study aims to analyze socio-spatial segregation in the Greater Vitória
Metropolitan Region (RMGV) through a cartographic approach. Recognizing
inequality as a structural element in Brazilian demographic and urban analyses, the
study reflects on how class, race, different family arrangements, intra-urban migration
flows, modes of occupation, and the morphology of the urban site produce and
intensify socio-spatial segregation. Based on 2010 census data and structuralist
theoretical approaches, the research investigates the relationships between family
profiles, residential mobility, and the horizontal and vertical dynamics that shape the
daily life of cities.
The dissertation is structured into three main sections. The first, titled
"Socio-Spatial Segregation: Poverty and Inequality," addresses the different
dimensions of poverty, emphasizing its social, geographic, and immaterial
manifestations, and discusses the need for multifactorial analyses beyond statistical
reductions. The second, "Socio-Spatial Segregation and Inequality in the Greater
Vitória Metropolitan Region," explores the urbanization process in the RMGV,
highlighting how migration and the precariousness of the urban economic structure
led to the formation of peripheral areas and the concentration of poverty in slums.
Finally, the third section, "Methodological Procedures: How to Map Inequality?"
presents methodological proposals for mapping inequalities, integrating approaches
such as the analysis of census sectors and the use of coremías to understand urban
flows and domains.
The results show that socio-spatial inequality in the RMGV is a multifaceted
phenomenon, shaped by historical and contemporary factors. The research
emphasizes the importance of understanding inequality as a spatial and relational
process, intrinsically linked to dynamics of inclusion and exclusion. By proposing
tools to map these inequalities and considering their various scales and
manifestations, the study offers theoretical and methodological contributions for the
formulation of public policies aimed at promoting more inclusive and equitable
urbanization.
