Summary: ABSTRACTThe local knowledge of traditional fishing populations are relevant sources in studies on fishing ecosystems and can be added to scientific studies.Artisanal fishing carried outby a community based on the southern coast of Espírito Santo is approached in the light of ethnoecological knowledge whose objective is to obtain information about theethnospecies targeting fishermen, mapping and characterizing physical aspects of the compartments in which they operate. Through Local Ecological Knowledge (CEL) it waspossible to understand the criteria used in the selection of bids, as well as the strategies to circumvent the characteristics not favorable to their activities. The hypothesis is thatthe fisherman strategically takes advantage of the different environmental characteristics, and these, in turn, determine the various practices and strategies for extractingresources, enabling minimum subsistence conditions throughout the year. However, in the perception of fishermen, urban and industrial growth has been spreading overtraditionally occupied territories, which has compromised productivity. Conducting ethno-ecological studies can be the starting point for having information and issues relatedto the management of coastal spaces, in order to include debates related to the socio-environmental perspectives of those who live in the place. The main technique used in theproduction of primary data was the use of interviews (n=22) with artisanal fishermen in the locality of Ubu and Parati, municipality of Anchieta (20 ° 48’S - 40 ° 35’O). It wasfound that the community presents a diversified fishing that extends from the abrasion platforms that border the beaches of the region to three nautical miles, in the regions ofsubstrate covered by gravel banks and rhodoliths. It was observed that fishermen alternate fishing areas and capture techniques depending on the oceanographic andclimatological conditions at the time. Another observation is that the empirical knowledge accumulated by fishermen is, to a large extent, correlated with data obtained in the scientific literature, however there is still a lack of studies that account for the analysis of impacts and specific development projects for improving the local fishermen’s lifequality.
