Summary: How does street photography, particularly when legitimated as modern art,
participate in the construction of a certain understanding of the modern city? From this question, this thesis deals with the political role of images on the idea of space, the spatial politics of images. It approaches the concept of spatial imagination, as presented on Doreen Masseys propositions about spatiality, in a dialogue with Jac- ques Rancière, as he touches on the subject of the aesthetic political aspect of art. The work approachs different aspects in the building of the idea of the modern city and, in particular, the citys anonymity as we investigate two books and an article by American photographer Walker Evans. These are: American Photographs, from 1938; Many Are Called, from 1966; Labor Anonymous, from 1946. The author presents as an integral part of the thesis the photography book entitled Sobre o anonimato [On Anonymity], which dialogues with Evans work investigated in the thesis. The construction of the fictional aspect of the city present in the photographic image is dealt when presenting the creative process of the publication, which is understood as an artistic unfolding that updates issues investigated here: spatial politics of images, city experience and urban anonymity.
Keywords: spatial politics of images; spatial imagination; anonymity; street
