Summary: ABSTRACT
The thesis discusses the population growth and the consequent environmental
problems increase. The main impacts resulting from the development of an urban area
on socio-environmental processes are linked to the form of land occupation, removal
of vegetation cover, with the consequent increase in impermeable surfaces, a fact that
has been occurring in most of the hydrographic basins that are located close to urban
expansion zones or inserted in the urban perimeter. This is Piúma’s situation, a county
located in the region of the lower course of Rio Novo, a hydrographic basin that is
located on the south coast of Espírito Santo. The research aims to characterize the
relationships between the evolution of population growth in the municipality of Piúma /
ES and the changes that have taken place in the socio-environmental dimensions that
have changed as a result of the urbanization process. For this to be achieved, diverse
bibliographies, use of Geotechnologies and field research were used. The population
growth in cities has generated significant negative impacts on the environment, such
as floods. These are increasingly severe due to the soil waterproofing, with the lack of
a rainwater management plan, and the excessive use of plumbing, the current situation
in the study area. With urban growth, urban infrastructure works significantly alter the
land cover and topography, and, consequently, the Urban Environmental Quality and
Quality of Life of the local environment. The advance of urbanization, with the
consequent population growth on the natural environment, in a poorly planned manner,
has caused the marked degradation of the areas close to the water courses in Piúma,
causing negative consequences for the region inhabitants, with the loss of
environmental and living quality of the space WHERE they live. These negative changes
will be addressed in the research through seven socio-environmental dimensions:
urbanization, vegetation cover, changes in watercourses, beach erosion, Basin Plan,
Framework of Water Bodies and environmental sanitation.
