Summary: ABSTRACT
The main objective of this research was to investigate the relationship of relief
and drainage network with neotectonic mechanisms in the low course of the
Doce River (Espírito Santo - southeastern Brazil). The methodological basis
used was integrated with the cabinet and field analyses. The cabinet analyses
were carried out in three (3) stages: i) bibliographic review on the research
theme; (ii) drawing up maps; and iii) interpretation of aerial photographs (Digital
Orthophotos). The field analyses made it possible to verify the main drainage
anomalies, morphotectonic features and lithology of geological compartments,
which were recorded by means of a camera with resolution of 10.1 megapixels
and GPS (Global Position System). Based on the analysis of the drainage
network and morphotectonic features in cabinet and field, it was possible to
identify two strongly contrasting compartments, directly related to the basic
geological subdivision of the state of Espírito Santo, which are: i) Pre-Cambrian
Basement Compartment, west of the studied area and ii) Compartment of
cenozoic deposits, east of the studied area. In these compartments, the main
guidelines of drainage patterns were associated, of drainage anomalies, density
and orientation of drainage and tectonic blocks and morphotectonic features to
lithostructural, lithological and neotectonic controls, especially with the
orientations of the orogen Araçuai (in which the studied area is included),
Colatina Range and, especially, to neotectonic events existing in the state of
Espírito Santo : E-W ominous transcorrence (possibly neogenic age), dextral
transcorence E-W (pleistocene to holocene) and NW-SE (holocene) distension.
