Summary: This research had as main objective to investigate the control of the neotectonic
mechanisms in the organization of the drainage network of the hydrographic
basin of the Bananal river, located in the North region of the state of Espírito
Santo - Southeast of Brazil. The methodological basis used includes the
analysis of the office and field. In the office, a bibliographic review were carried
out, analyzes of the drainage network at a scale of 1: 100.000 (elaboration of
drainage anomalies maps, drainage pattern, orientation of the drainage
network, asymmetric of hydrographic basin), lineament analysis,
geomorphological analyzes ( hypsometric map, base surface map, scan profile)
and neotectonic analysis of pre-existing data. All maps were created using the
ArcGIS 10.1 ™ software (ESRI, 2012). In the field, the main drainage
anomalies, lithologies of the geological compartments, aspects of the relief and
the neotectonic outcrops were identified and recorded. Based on the analysis of
the drainage network and the relief, it was possible to identify several
physiographic elements that show probable neotectonic controls, which can be
highlighted, particularly: a drainage network WHERE the river channels are
geometrically organized, oriented lake, observing, yet, several drainage
anomalies, which according to the literature, are characteristic of neotectonic
control. In addition, the basin is located in a region with the presence of parallel
and rectilinear lagoons, also considered as an aspect of neotectonic control in
the literature. There is a marked frequency of NW-SE orientation in the drainage
of the basin, with possible relation to neotectonic efforts characterized by
normal NW-SE failures, related to the EW dextral transcurrence regime, and
also an important NE-SW orientation frequency in the drainage, with possible
relation to neotectonic efforts characterized by sinister NNE-SSW failures,
related to the EW destral transcurrence regime, identified in previous works in
the area. The analysis of the characteristics found in the area of the Bananal
river basin suggests that the area can be controlled neotectonically, due to the
drainage and relief characteristics, identified in the mappings and verified in the
field, linked to the presence of neotectonic flaws in the basin, described in
existing works, showing that there are 3 (three) neotectonic events acting - EW
dextral flow regime, NW-SE distension regime and EW sinister flow regime -
and that possibly influenced the current drainage network.
Keywords: neotectonics, drainage anomalies, Bananal river basin.
