Summary: This dissertation analyzes the process of allocation of public lands and the colonization of
northern Colatina (ES) in the first half of the 20th century, focusing on the Colonial Nuclei
that emerged from public land concessions. Based on an approach that articulates agrarian
history, territorial formation, and oral accounts, the study investigates how different forms of
access to land, purchase, possession, and occupation, materialized in this context.
Initially, it discusses the historical formation of the Brazilian land tenure structure, from the
sesmaria system to the 1850 Land Law, highlighting its role in consolidating private property
and excluding Indigenous and peasant populations. It then addresses territorial disputes in
Espírito Santo, relating the expansion of coffee production, the abolition of slavery, and
immigration policies as central elements in the reorganization of the territory.
In the empirical analysis, the research shows that the colonization of northwestern Espírito
Santo did not occur over “demographic voids,” but rather over previously occupied territories,
often rendered invisible. Interviews and local sources reveal the diversity of actors involved,
immigrants, internal migrants, squatters, and native populations, as well as conflicts and
poorly documented processes of expulsion.
Thus, the dissertation demonstrates that the occupation of these lands was marked by
contradictions, disputes, and diverse strategies of appropriation, contributing to a critical
understanding of territorial and land formation in the region.
